Masaniello, whose real name was Tommaso Aniello, was a significant historical figure and a popular leader during the 17th century in Italy. Born in Naples in 1622, he became famous for his role as the leader in the revolt against Spanish rule and oppressive fiscal policies in 1647. His story is an emblematic example of popular rebellion in Europe at the time, and Masaniello is still celebrated today as a symbol of resistance against oppression.

Masaniello was a fisherman and fish seller at the Naples market. His family was poor, which made him particularly sensitive to the economic hardships that afflicted the lower classes of Neapolitan society under the Spanish government. In July 1647, the young man was a key figure in the revolt of the lazzari (the term "lazzari" referred to the poorest members of Neapolitan society). The spark that ignited the rebellion was the introduction of a new tax on wheat by the Spanish government, which further exacerbated the already harsh economic conditions of the population.

The revolt took place mainly in Naples and saw widespread popular participation. Masaniello demonstrated remarkable leadership skills and charisma, managing to unite various social layers in the fight against the Spanish authorities. Within a few days, he and his followers took control of Naples, forcing the viceroy to negotiate and accept several of their demands, including the cancellation of some taxes.

However, Masaniello's rapid rise to power and his control over the city were short-lived. After just a week in power, his behavior became increasingly unpredictable and paranoid, possibly due to lead poisoning or other causes that altered his mental state.

This change in his behavior turned many of his own supporters against him and facilitated his downfall; indeed, Masaniello was assassinated by a sniper on July 16, 1647, just ten days after the start of the revolt.

Despite his leadership lasting only a brief time, Masaniello has remained a heroic figure in the collective memory of Naples and Italy. His story has been romanticized in numerous works of art, literature, and music, becoming a symbol of resistance against oppression and injustice.

The revolt led by Masaniello is considered one of the first significant examples of popular insurrection in Europe and has had a profound impact on Italian history, influencing future generations in the fight for social justice.
