Maria di Durazzo

Maria d'Angiò, known as Maria of Calabria or Maria of Durazzo, was the first wife of Filippo II di Taranto, the Latin Emperor of Constantinople. She was Countess of Alba, Durazzo, Baux, Avellino, and Princess of Achaea. Widowed at the age of 19 after the execution of Carlo di Durazzo in 1348, she had five children from her brief marriage. Subsequently, she married Roberto del Balzo in 1350 and, after his death, Filippo II di Taranto in 1355. From this marriage, five children were also born, all of whom died in infancy. In 1364, with Roberto's death, Filippo became the Latin Emperor and Prince of Achaea. Maria died in 1366 during the war for Achaea and was buried in Santa Chiara.
