In ancient Rome, the term "basilica" referred to a public building constructed in the Forum, the main square. The "basilica" was used as a meeting place and for administering justice. Only from the 4th century AD did the term become associated with Christian churches, inheriting the Roman basilica architecture with aisles divided by columns or pillars and often ending in an apse.
