Tintinnabula were decorative objects used in ancient Rome, including in Pompeii. They consisted of small bells or metal pendants, often made of bronze or silver, that were hung from doors, windows, columns, and other architectural features. These objects were considered good luck and were also used to ward off evil spirits. Tintinnabula in Pompeii were often made with images of deities or animals. To date, many specimens of tintinnabula have been recovered from archaeological excavations in the city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.
