Livia Drusilla Claudia (58 BC - 29 AD), known simply as Livia and after 14 AD as Julia Augusta, was a Roman noblewoman, wife of Emperor Augustus, and Augusta of the Empire. Mother of Tiberius and Drusus the Elder, grandmother of Germanicus and Claudius, and great-grandmother of Caligula and great-great-grandmother of Nero. She was deified by Claudius. Livia, daughter of Marcus Livius Drusus Claudianus and Alfidia, married at the age of 16 to Tiberius Claudius Nero, a patrician cousin. After her husband's death at the Battle of Philippi, she married Octavian (future Augustus). Although the marriage was political, it lasted 52 years. Livia was influential, managing Octavian's finances and defending his interests. Despite intrigues and deaths in the family, Augustus adored her. After Augustus' death in 14 AD, his will adopted her as his daughter and granted her titles and property. Her relationship with Tiberius became tense, and after her death in 29 AD, Claudius deified her in 42 AD as Diva Augusta.
