the Vatican Caves

The Vatican Caves, beneath the Basilica of Saint Peter, constitute an underground church between the old and the new basilica. Known as the "grottoes," they house papal tombs and artworks from the ancient basilica. Some buried personalities include popes such as Boniface VIII and Pius VI, as well as moral or religious figures. The grottoes are a monumental complex rich in history and art, with monuments such as the sarcophagus of Junius Bassus and the funerary monument of Pope Boniface VIII. In addition to popes, queens, cardinals, and other characters rest there, making it a place full of historical and spiritual significance.
