Peter Michael Vigil von Thun und Hohenstein
Peter Michael Vigil von Thun und Hohenstein (Trento, 1724 - Castel Thun, 1800) was the last prince-bishop of Trento, ruling from 1776 until his death. A member of the noble Thun family, he studied rhetoric in Trento and law and theology at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome. In 1738, he joined the Cathedral Chapter of Trento, becoming archdeacon in 1749. Consecrated prince-bishop on November 30, 1776, he signed a treaty with Maria Theresa of Austria in 1777, relinquishing part of the Principality's autonomy. In 1779, he transformed the Abbey of San Lorenzo into a prison, commissioning Francesco Vigilio Barbacovi to draft a new Judicial Code, which came into effect in 1788.
In 1796, Napoleon's troops invaded Trento, but Thun had already taken refuge in Passau. He died at the family castle in Vigo di Ton on January 17, 1800. In 1801, the Treaty of Lunéville sanctioned the annexation of the principality to Austria, which was carried out in 1803. With the annexation, the episcopal principality was abolished.
