GALVANOPLASTIC TECHNIQUE

The gilded sculptures of the Cathedral are the earliest example of the galvanoplastic technique, used to forge metal statues that were hollow and therefore particularly light. The technique was invented here in St. Petersburg by the Prussian physicist Moritz Hermann Jacobi.
