Fort Siloso is one of the most interesting historical sites in Singapore. It is the only coastal gun battery to have been restored of the 12 of its kind that once formed "Fortress Singapore" at the start of the Second World War.

Fort Siloso, whose name derives from a Malay word meaning “rock”, was built by the British between 1874 and 1880 to protect the narrow western entrance to the city’s port from attack, including pirate raids. The rocky peak of Mount Siloso was flattened during the construction work, so that a gun platform could be installed.

During the Second World War, the fort was expanded and modernized, and became the city’s first line of defense....
