Over the years, the Palau de la Virreina has served various purposes. It has been used as a royal residence, a military barracks, and a courthouse. In the early 20th century, it was converted into a cultural center and currently houses the Virreina Centre de la Imatge, which focuses on contemporary photography and visual arts.
