Hi, I'm Ed, your personal guide. Together with MyWoWo, I'd like to welcome you to one of the wonders of the world.

Today I'll accompany you through the Puerta del Sol in Madrid's historic center.

Madrid's Old Town is one of the most exciting places in the world!

The lively half-oval shaped square where you now stand is the heart of Madrid and the most lively point of its historical, social, and commercial center: this is Puerta del Sol Square, nicknamed "Sol." People from Madrid often say, "If the Earth revolves around the sun, Madrid revolves around Sol!" (sun in Spanish).

In fact, the square is a focal point for Spanish transport and is always full of people: tourists, residents of Madrid, street artists, preachers, mimes, acrobats... be careful though, in the midst of so much confusion, watch your wallet!

Until the mid-nineteenth century, this square was a simple crossing of winding streets clinging to its walls. There were a few churches and a convent, which have since been demolished, but also a large number of cafes where writers and intellectuals would meet up. It was Queen Isabel II, the only Queen of Spain who actually reigned, who launched the urban renewal of this space at the end of the 19th century. Since then its redesign has never stopped: the sidewalks have been widened, a pedestrian area has been created, the neon signs have all been removed... except for the Tío Pepe Sherry sign thanks to its symbolic value. Lastly, some of the buildings overlooking the square which are now home to large multinationals have been renovated, and a bike path has been added.

If you want to check the official time in Spain, look at the great 19th century clock on the tower of Casa de Correos. Another architectural element that you won't fail to notice is the whale-like shape made of steel and crystal: this is the platform roof leading to the new Cercanías line railway which was opened only a few years ago.

FUN FACT: you probably know Puerta del Sol from when the Indignados movement chose the square as its headquarters on May 15, 2011.
