Hilla von Rebay (1890-1967), a German painter, served as the artistic director of the Guggenheim Foundation. After studying in Paris and Munich, she joined the "November Group" and in 1923 founded "Die Krater". She emigrated to New York in 1927, and in 1939, she directed the first museum of non-objective painting in Manhattan. In 1943, she involved Frank Lloyd Wright in the creation of the Guggenheim Museum, which opened in 1959. However, she was sidelined shortly after the death of Solomon R. Guggenheim in 1949.
