Charles Wilkes (1798-1877), American explorer and naval officer, led the United States Exploring Expedition in 1838. He explored Tierra del Fuego, traversed the Antarctic Peninsula to 70° South, and sailed through the Pacific and Indian Oceans. His explorations contributed to significant discoveries about Antarctica.
