The oldest core of the square houses a fountain crowned by the statue "Madonna Verona," dating back to the Roman era (from the year 380), later enriched with medieval details. This work, commissioned by Cansignorio, is an example of artistic recycling, combining Roman fragments with a medieval Gothic style. Originally gilded, with a large thermal pool and a statue from the Capitolium, it was created during a hydraulic project by Cansignorio to bring water from the Lorì di Avesa stream to Piazza Erbe. The statue, holding a cartouche between its hands, bears the ancient motto of the Comune inscribed, declaring: "to this city, bearer of justice and lover of praise."
